Wine imports to surge

The drought is expected to lead to a surge in wine imports of up to 25 per cent by 2009.

Just two years after major oversupply problems, bulk wine producers say they are now trying to compensate for a shortfall in local supplies.

The Australian Wine Sector Supply and Demand Assessment expects imports to increase from 34 million litres to 128 million.

Lawrie Stanford from the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, says it is a unique period for the industry.

“The current seasons are extraordinary and the mere evidence that two years ago we thought we had an oversupply issue for the next five years is now turned into shortages given the exceptional seasons that we’re having,” he says.
