Years after court fight, has Michigan learned its lesson?

Michigan’s wine industry wants to expand from its current 1,500 acres to 10,000 acres in the next 15 years. Key to this expansion will be the ability to ship wine to wine tourists who visit the Traverse Bay area or southwest Michigan from Lansing, or Dallas or wherever.

Yet, only a few short years ago, the might of Michigan government was deployed against fair and easy shipping rules.

Did Gov. Jennifer Granholm or other officials at the National Governors Association meeting in Traverse City note the irony? They were there, in part, to enjoy the crops and activities spurred by the growth of Michigan’s wine industry - an industry long stifled by regulation.
