Wine imports soared 31 percent in 2006 from a year earlier as a growing number of people enjoyed the grape beverage deemed beneficial to health, a report showed yesterday.

The country’s wine imports reached $88.6 million last year, up from $67.6 million the previous year, according to the report by the Agriculture and Fisheries Marketing Corp. The volume of imports also jumped 17 percent to 22,195 tons from 18,984 tons in 2005.
