Germany’s Wine Exports Rise 21 Percent on U.S. Demand

Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) — German wine growers on the banks of the river Moselle increased exports of their famous Riesling by 21 percent in the year through July on rising demand from the U.S. and Scandinavia.

Exports rose to 109 million euros ($156 million) from 90 million euros a year earlier, the Moselle Wine Growers Association said at a press conference in Mertesdorf, Germany today. Sales to countries including the U.S., the Netherlands, the U.K. and Norway rose 7.1 percent to 374,000 hectoliters, or 37.4 million liters.

About 43 percent of the output in the region was sold outside Germany. More than half of the exports went to the U.S., where drinkers increasingly recognize efforts by the more than 5,000 producers in the southwestern part of Germany to improve the wine’s quality.
