EU May Abolish Quotas as Part of Wine Market Revamp

June 27 (Bloomberg) — The European Union, where three- fifths of the world’s wine is made and consumed, wants to scrap a quota system as part of plans to gradually overhaul the way vines are planted and the drink marketed.

European Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel says too much of the wine industry’s 1.3 billion-euro ($1.75 billion) annual budget goes to compensate farmers for pouring away wine no one wants and is hobbled by out-of-date marketing and planting rules.
