Bulk wine exports slow as bottled shipments rise

The Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation says growth in bulk wine exports has slowed over the past 12 months, while bottled shipments are increasing.

The Corporation’s wine export approval report for September shows the volume of bulk shipments increased by 26 million litres in the past year.

The growth is significantly less than in the same period last year when bulk exports increased by 50 million litres.

Meanwhile, the export of bottled wine volumes grew by 44 million litres.

Corporation spokesman Lawrie Stanford says recent small vintages are correcting the oversupply problem, which means less bulk wine is being exported.

“Some bulk shipments are simply opportunistic sales to deal with the oversupply, so that’s the sales that are coming off,” he said.

The total value of the Australian wine exports has grown 10 per cent to $3 billion.
